Jesus on Unity – The Body of Christ Becoming ONE

What does Jesus Christ say about Unity? Will the Body of Christ ever become ONE?

Here is an excerpt from a prayer of Jesus to the Father as recorded in the Holy Bible at John 17:18-23:

“As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth. I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.”

Notice how often the word ONE is repeated in this prayer of Jesus?
Five times!

Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines the term ONE as “the number denoting unity.”

It is evident and without doubt that Jesus Christ desires His people to be unified.

Common knowledge defines the term “one” as “a single unit or thing,” but biblically, we know that in marriage, the male and the female – as two individuals – are joined together, and God calls them ONE.

Jesus says it like this in Mark 10:8:

“..the two shall become one flesh’; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh.”

Also see Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:5, Mark 10:8, and Ephesians 5:31.

Jesus is praying that the people who believe in Him through the word of His disciples will be ONE – unified. Nearly 2,000 years ago, the one we call Lord was so concerned about His people in the times to come that He prayed that ALL of us who believe in Him through the Word of His disciples would become ONE. His desire was for us to be so unified that our oneness would be just like the oneness He has with the Father and the Father has with Him.

Why?

Why was Unity or Uniting those who believe in Him so important to Him?

Jesus was not concerned about this movement around Him only while He was on the earth. He had the foresight to know what would become of the movement many years later, after He walked the earth.

Jesus revealed His true concern in prayer by saying “… that the world may believe that You sent Me.”

The people of Jesus being United together in Him and the Father would be compelling evidence to the world that the Father did indeed send Jesus! The Body of Christ being ONE is what Jesus desires because He knows it will convince all of the world of Him.

The Bible records the last part of Jesus’s prayer with Him, saying, “that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.”

The followers of Jesus Christ being United also convinces the world that the Father does indeed love us as He loved Jesus.

Are you beginning to see how essential Unity in Christ is to Jesus and the impact He knows it will make in the world?

So where are we today? Is the Body of Christ ONE? Has the Body of Christ ever been ONE since the resurrection of Jesus? Why is dividing, separating, and believers not being unified and staying unified such a snare to Christianity?
